Organ donation: In her death, Chandigarh's 3-year-old girl Kanchan turns a life saviour

In a heart-warming act of compassion, the family of three-year-old Kanchan, who lost her life after being hit by a car, donated her organs to give a new lease of life to those in dire need.

Kanchan, daughter of Lal Singh from Kaimbwala, was admitted to the GMSH-16 on July 28, and later shifted to the PGIMER the same day. Despite best efforts of medical professionals, She was declared brain dead on August 6. Her father in a profound gesture of altruism, consented to donate all her organs, resulting in the successful retrieval and transplantation of both kidneys at the PGIMER. Both of Kanchan’s kidneys were transplanted into a 26-year-old female matching recipient from Chandigarh.

“In the face of unimaginable grief, Lal Singh’s decision to donate his beloved daughter’s organs is a beacon of hope and humanity. Kanchan’s noble gesture will forever be remembered and cherished, as it embodies the true spirit of organ donation and the potential to save multiple lives,” said Prof Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER.

“Losing Kanchan has been the hardest experience of our lives, but knowing that her organs have given others a second chance at life brings us some comfort. We hope that our decision will inspire others to consider organ donation and help save lives,” said Lal Singh.

Head Constable Anup Singh of the Chandigarh Police, who played a crucial role in counselling and supporting the family during this challenging time, added: “It was a privilege to assist Lal Singh and his family in making this brave decision.
