In Brief: Year’s first FIR under excise act

Chandigarh: The first FIR of 2025 in the city was registered at Maloya police station under the Excise Act. Sources said a case against Manoj, alias Moji, was registered at 12.13 am on January 1. Manoj of Dadu Majra was held while illegally possessing 48 quarters of country made liquor. He was later released on bail.

Man arrested in snatching case

Panchkula: The police arrested an accused for allegedly snatching gold earrings from an elderly woman. Sheela Devi (63) of Raipur Rani said the incident took place near the town's market when a biker, claiming to be her acquaintance, took her to a deserted place and snatched her earrings.

UT assn to hold premier league

Chandigarh: In order to make cricket more popular in all age groups, the Union Territory Cricket Association (UTCA) would organise the Chandigarh Premier League (CPL) in February. In a meeting chaired by UTCA president Sanjay Tandon, the core committee prepared its blueprint. The league would be played between six teams from February 7 to 23. Only registered players of the UTCA would be eligible to participate in this league. All league matches would be held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula.

Pythian assn embarks on trek

Chandigarh: A 25-member team of the Haryana Pythian Association was flagged off on Thursday by Rajesh Jogpal, association president, and Shipra Bansal, Chairperson, Chandigarh Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, on trek through the regions of Dalhousie, Khajjiar, Kalatop and Chamba. The team would go through the rugged terrain of Kalatop. Its members would also get a chance to get themselves acquainted with cultural heritage of Chamba.

Lakshay School win by 55 runs

Chandigarh: In the ongoing 17th Sub Junior Cricket Championship, Lakshay School of Cricket, Kalka, defeated Satguru Cricket Academy by 55 runs. Batting first, the Kalka team scored 183/6 in 25 overs with the help of Jash (89), Deven Dahiya (36) and Yogeshwar Chauhan (25). Aman claimed two wickets for the bowling side, while Himanshu picked one. In reply, Satguru Academy scored 128/8 in allotted overs. Uday (32), Mohammad Aman (16) and Khushal (13) were the main contributors for the side. Devesh Pandey picked three wickets, Chestha Verma took two and Khushi Patel bagged one wicked for the bowling side.

Squash assn to hold trials

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Squash Association would organise trials to select men and women teams for the upcoming National games. The trials will be held on January 4 and 5 at Lake Sports Complex. The selected teams would participate in the 38th National Games, which would be held in Uttarakhand, from January 28.

Tennis tourney from tomorrow

Mohali: The Roots Tennis Academy would organise the Roots-Open Prize Money Tennis Tournament from January 4 to 5. The tournament would be organised for the singles and doubles (boys and girls) combined U-8, 10, 12 and 14 years age groups. Interested players can submit their entries with the organisers.

City girl to play Chennai Tourney

Mohali: Local cricketer Kashvee Gautam has been selected for the Women's Seniors One Day Challengers Trophy, starting at Chennai from January 5. She would represent Team C in the tournament. Earlier, Nandini Sharma and Shivangi Yadav were selected for the same tournament from Union Territory Cricket Association.

Ex-cricketer promoted as DC

Mohali: Former Indian U-19 and first class cricketer Sanjiv DP Azad has achieved a rare feat of getting promoted as Deputy Commissioner (DC), Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST). Sanjiv, who is the elder son of India’s first Dronacharya Awardee cricket coach DP Azad, has been active in the local cricket and golf fraternity.
