Chandigarh, February 17
Traders of the Industrial Area, Phase 2, called off their 10-day-old relay fast here today.
The traders, under the banner of the Beopari Ekta Manch, were on relay fast for the past 10 days in protest against a survey carried out by officials of the Estate Office in the area over the violation of building bylaws.
Deepak Sharma, who was leading the protest, said they ended their hunger strike on the assurance of BJP leader Sanjay Tandon.
Sharma said Sanjay Tandon, former BJP state president and co-incharge of Himachal Pradesh, while talking to the traders today, assured that he had spoken to the UT Administrator and higher officials regarding the issues of traders. The traders would not be harassed in the name of survey.
The traders told Tandon that issues of the Industrial Area had been hanging fire for the past 25 years. The traders shared the problems of the Industrial Area such as conversion of leasehold to freehold, FAR, conversion policy among others. Tandon assured the traders that a policy would be formulated for the redressal of their grievances in the coming days.
