Chandigarh, October 27
The 74th Infantry Day was observed at the Chandimandir Military Station today with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Veer Smriti War Memorial for paying tributes to the martyrs.
Maj Gen Manjinder Singh, Major General General Staff (Operations), Headquarters Western Command, paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the memorial on the behalf of the Infantry fraternity of the command.
It was on this day in 1947 that troops of the 1st Battalion of the Sikh Regiment landed at Srinagar Airport to defend the Kashmir Valley against the onslaught of Pakistani raiders. The day is commemorated as Infantry Day every year since then. — TNS
