Interstate fake currency module busted in Mohali

The police busted an interstate fake currency module, arresting two accused and recovering fake and demonetised currency with the face value of Rs 9.99 crore.

Sharing details, Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Hans said the accused have been identified as Sachin, a resident of Pehowa, Kurukshetra, and Gurdeep, a resident of Gurdev Nagar, Kurukshetra.

A tip-off was received regarding the movement of two suspects linked to an interstate syndicate involved in circulating fake currency. A naka was set up near the PWD Rest House, Ghaggar Bridge, on the Old Ambala–Kalka Highway and the suspects were intercepted while travelling in a white SUV, leading to the recovery of Rs 11,05,000 in original demonetised currency and Rs 9.88 crore fake currency.

Initial interrogation of the accused has revealed that they used to place original notes on the top of bundles while stuffing fake notes inside, to cheat individuals.

Dera Bassi Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikramjeet Singh Brar said, “They have duped several people in Punjab and neighbouring states and have criminal background with involvement in prior cases of cheating and counterfeit currency.”

“A cheating case dated October 1 wherein a Mohali resident lost Rs 7 crore had been registered against them at the Phase 1 police station. Several other cases with similar modus operandi have been registered against them in Rajasthan and other states as well,” he added.

A fresh case has been registered on November 13 at the Dera Bassi police station. The police said further investigation is underway and more arrests are likely.
