Dr Irshad Kamil, renowned Bollywood lyricist and poet, delivered the 3rd Professor Urmi Kessar Memorial Lecture at Panjab University today. Addressing a packed audience, Dr Kamil spoke on the relevance of poetry in contemporary society, under the topic, "Do we need Poetry in Today’s Times?"

Dr Kamil, an alumnus of Panjab University, began by highlighting the growing disconnect from reflective practices in a fast-paced, material-driven world. "We are living in an age of start-ups and fleeting moments, but poetry offers a bridge to our inner selves," he said.

Drawing from current trends, he explained that poetry, rooted in silence and inner honesty, allows for reflection in an era dominated by instant gratification. He also expressed concern over how art is increasingly confined to digital spaces, where emoticons replace true expression. His talk, enriched with poignant couplets, resonated deeply with the audience, earning him a standing ovation.

The event also featured a tribute to the late Professor Urmi Kessar, a pioneer in modern Indian art history. The lecture series, initiated to honor her legacy, provides a platform for intellectual discussions on art, literature, and history.

In her address, Panjab University Vice Chancellor, Prof Renu Vig, acknowledged the Kessar family's role in establishing the series. She also thanked Dr Kamil for his insightful words. Prof Radha Kessar, daughter of the late Professor, expressed gratitude to the university for continuing her mother’s vision.
