Tricity residents ringed in the New Year in style with celebrations, festivities, dance and parties even as the police kept a close watch around clubs, especially at Sector 26 and Sector 7.

Most clubs recorded a count of 150 guests on an average. Teams comprising five to seven cops guarded the main entrance and exit points at key parking areas in Sector 7 and Sector 26. The sectors house over 20 clubs, restaurants and discotheques. From Chandiland, Sector 7, front lobby manager Vivek shared, “We have more than 150 people in the club. We are frisking each and every person, clicking pictures of their ID cards. It’s a busy day for us.”

Most clubs prohibited the entry of single men. The front desk manager at Social, Sector 7, said, “We are not allowing single men here at the club. There are families and couples here. We would like to keep the environment safe for women.”

Sector 7 SHO Mohan Lal, who was doing the rounds of a parking lot, said, “We have deputed 43 police personnel on the rear side parking area of the market, 34 on the front side and there are two PCR vehicles here. Apart from that, there’s one commando PCR too.”

At Sector 26, the parking lots were guarded by the police. Every vehicle entering the parking lot was checked thoroughly. “We don’t want people to carry arms and ammunition here. Also, the parking lot exit point checkposts will help us catch hold of drunk drivers before they hit the main roads,” said a cop at the parking lot.

Shweta Singh, a Delhi-based businesswoman visiting Chandigarh, said, “I like to visit Chandigarh because it’s safe and the security is quite on dot today. It makes me feel safe.”
