Jeweller held for buying stolen ornaments

The Crime Branch, Sector 19, has arrested a jeweller who purchased stolen jewellery at low prices from accused.

On January 2 this year, a local resident had lodged a theft complaint with the Sector-10 police post here. According to the complainant, the family had been away for some work. Upon returning home, they found the cupboard locks broken and jewellery and cash missing. A case was registered and an investigation began.

During the investigation, a Crime Branch team arrested two accused — Sandeep Kumar, alias Sanju, and Jagjit Singh, alias Jagga — on November 3. Both are residents of Ambala. During questioning, they confessed to the crime and handed over Rs 20,000 in cash stolen from the house. They further disclosed that they had sold the stolen gold jewellery to Vinay Verma, son of Trilokinath, a resident of Ambala district.

Following this revelation, the police arrested Vinay Verma on November 17. He was produced in the court and remanded in two-day police custody. During interrogation, the accused led the police to his home in Ambala, from where the stolen jewellery was recovered. The recovered items included one gold necklace, two gold earrings, one gold pendant and four gold rings, weighing a total of 61 grams and valued at approximately Rs 8 lakh.

The DCP (Crime), Manpreet Singh Sudan, has issued a public advisory urging citizens to always verify the receipt, original bill, authenticity certificates, seller’s identity and related documents when purchasing any second-hand items.
