Justice Harpreet Singh Brar appointed permanent judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court

Less than two years after Justice Harpreet Singh Brar was sworn in as an additional judge, the President of India has appointed him as a permanent judge of the of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. As of now, the high court has 51 judges against the sanctioned strength of 85.

Justice Brar was sworn in as an additional judge on April 10, 2023. Born on December 20, 1975, Justice Brar comes from a family with deep legal roots. His father, Gurbachan Singh Brar, served as Deputy District Attorney and Additional Advocate-General for Punjab.

Justice Brar completed his matriculation from DAV High School, Sri Muktsar Sahib, in 1990, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Panjab University in 1995. He later pursued a Bachelor of Laws degree from Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh, completing it in 1999.

Enrolling as an advocate with Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in May 2000, Justice Brar built an illustrious legal career. He served as Punjab Additional Advocate-General from 2009 to 2014 and as panel counsel for multiple state bodies, including Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority, Punjab Pollution Control Board, and Punjab Energy Development Agency.

Justice Brar was elected as a member of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana for three consecutive terms since 2008, and served twice as its honorary secretary. In 2019, he was unanimously elected chairman of the bar council. Additionally, he held the position of Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association president for two consecutive terms (2015-2017).

Designated as a senior advocate on May 26, 2021, Justice Brar also contributed to legal education by organising and delivering lectures at legal literacy seminars across Punjab and Haryana. Known for his expertise in constitutional and criminal law, he handled several pro bono cases and served as amicus curiae in multiple matters.
