Juvenile among 3 held for firing at Dera Bassi immigration firm
The police arrested three persons, including a juvenile, for a Rs 1 crore extortion bid and firing on an immigration-cum-coaching centre in Dera Bassi on Thursday afternoon.
Those arrested have been identified as Mohit, a resident of Lakhnaur village in Ambala, Jagdeep Singh, alias Jaggu, of Dera Bassi and a juvenile. Two pistols, three live rounds and the bike used in the crime have been recovered from them, the police said.
The juvenile has been sent to a juvenile home, while the other two have been remanded in police custody today.
Two masked youths fired five-six rounds at an immigration-cum-coaching institute, Education Point Immigration Services and Consultants, in an extortion bid in broad daylight yesterday.
Before fleeing, the assailants threw a slip, demanding Rs 1 crore from the owner, Harwinder Singh. The gunshots were aimed at the firm’s main gate and no one was injured in the incident.
The police said Jagdeep Singh had recently visited Mandeep Singh, alias Gurri, lodged in Tihar jail. Mandeep had reportedly facilitated Jagdeep and Mohit’s meeting. Jagdeep had also reportedly provided weapons to the assailants.
Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek said, “The consultancy owner had reportedly received an extortion call around a year ago, too. The police are investigating the role of Mandeep Singh and others in the case. The assailants had conducted a recce before the firing. The gunshots were fired by Mohit. When the police team raided his hideout hours later, he tried to escape and fell, leading to a fracture in his leg. He is undergoing treatment.”
This is the second firing incident related to extortion in Dera Bassi in the last two months. On July 20, shots were fired at a diagnostic laboratory in the main market.
