Kataria approves transfer of V-3 roads to UT Admn

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has approved the proposal sent by the MC General House for handing over the V -3 roads, which falls within its jurisdiction, to the UT Engineering Department for maintenance

Sources said the administration has also issued the formal order for transfer of these roads to the Engineering Department. It has started preparing the re-carpeting estimates.

The agenda regarding the transfer of V-3 roads to UT was placed in the General House meeting held on August 26.

The MC has 71 V-3 roads under its jurisdiction, with a total length of 275 km. As per maintenance norms, re-surfacing, re-strengthening and re-carpeting are undertaken at an interval of five years (about 50 km every year) to maintain road surface quality. Due to fund constraints, these works have not been undertaken in the past few years, resulting in the deterioration of these roads.

For the current financial year, 150 km of V-3 roads are due for re-surfacing and strengthening. The estimated cost per km is Rs 15 lakh, with total fund requirement pegged at about Rs 45 crore.

Harpreet Kaur Babla Mayor, who had proposed the agenda, said owing to the shortage of funds, these sector-dividing internal roads had not been maintained for years. She thanked the Governor for giving approval to the proposal.

She said the agenda was passed for the benefit of the residents and also in view of the fact that it would save MC money also.

After the recent rain spells, the conditions of the road leading to the Sector 26 mandi has deteriorated badly. Road from Punjab University to Dhanas has been completely damaged. The roads are riddled with potholes.

It was announced in the MC House meeting that once the roads are re-carpeted, another agenda will be tabled for taking these back from the administration.

Rs 1.56-cr tender floated for road works

Chandigarh: The UT Engineering Department has floated tenders worth Rs 1.56 crore for repair and re-carpeting of key city roads. Fresh tenders have been floated for the repair of Vigyan Path (junctions 7–12), Chandi Path (junctions 42–37) and Udyog Path (junctions 29–41) with an estimated cost of Rs 64.02 lakh. Another Rs 92.32-lakh tender has been floated for Himalaya Marg, Sukhna Path, and Sarovar Path.
