Cops to issue challan for violation of lane driving, blocking slip roads

With no markings and signages to make motorists aware of lane driving, stopping vehicles on roadside of main carriageways and blocking slip roads at intersections, the UT traffic police will still go ahead with their plan to penalise violators from February 1. A minimum penalty of Rs 500 will be imposed on violators, while repeat offenders will have to shell out Rs 1,000.
What to do
- Follow lane driving.
Don’t stop vehicle at carriageways on Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg and Udyog Path.
Give freeway to left-moving traffic at intersections.
The UT traffic police are going to start challaning motorists for violation of lane driving, blocking the way of left-turning vehicles and stopping vehicles on the roadside of main carriageways.
Stopping vehicles on the roadside of main carriageways will be restricted on Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg and Udyog Path. The police said people could stop their vehicles on service lanes or slip roads to attend a call or pick and drop someone.
SSP (Traffic) Shashank Anand said challans will be done steadily, along with awareness drives.
The SSP said lane enforcement would be done wherever lane markings were available. Traffic cops would be deployed in different parts of the city to keep a check on violation and awareness, which would go hand in hand.
Sources said initially enforcement of lane driving would be on auto drivers who stop vehicles on the roadside, which disrupts smooth flow of traffic.
Meanwhile, cops present at the intersections will also ensure that the motorists don’t block the way of left-moving traffic.
