Khalsa College, Mahilpur, win football c’ship

Chandigarh, February 21

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Mahilpur, won the 58th Principal Harbhajan Singh Memorial All India Football Tournament by registering a 1-0 win over Sant Baba Bhag Singh University, Khiala, in Mahilpur. After a goalless first half, the only goal of the match was scored by Sekhar Singh in the 78th minute.

Government School, Phagwara, won the boys’ U-17 final by defeating FA Baddon in a tie-breaker finish. After a 1-1 draw in the stipulated 70 minutes, the Phagwara school won 5-4 on penalties. Earlier, Rajwinder Singh (45th minute) netted the first goal to put the Phagwara school ahead but Sajan equalised for FA Baddon in the 69th minute.

Punjab Police, Jalandhar, won the club category final by defeating Punjab Football Club, Mohali, 2-1. Sarbjeet Singh netted the first goal for Punjab Police in the 22nd minute while the Mohali outfit equalised through Himanshu in the 60th minute. Just two minutes later, Punjab Police were ahead as Manveer Singh scored through a free-kick.

The Punjab Police team maintained the 2-1 lead to win the final. Paramjit Singh was declared the best player in the club category, while Gurpreet Singh was named the best player in the college category. In the boys’ U-17 category, Karandeep Singh was named with best emerging player. Earlier, right-forward Inderjit helped Sant Baba Bhag Singh University to confirm their berth in the final by defeating Lyalpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, 1-0. He scored the only goal of the match in the 71st minute.
