Kharar villagers oppose ‘move’ to transfer jurisdiction to Rupnagar
Administration officials, however, said they were not aware of any such development in the coming days
Residents of 35 villages of Kharar block, farmer union members and advocates have expressed serious reservations over the state government’s anticipated move to transfer their jurisdiction from Mohali to Rupnagar district.
Villages falling under Gharuan in Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency, including Makadeyan, Tripadi, Madanheri, Peer Sohana and Rurki Pukhtan, are under the spotlight, they claimed.
The development comes in the backdrop of proposed move of carving out Anandpur Sahib district from Rupnagar on November 24.
The protesters claimed that the no official has approached them to take their suggestions.
Administration officials, however, said they were not aware of any such development in the coming days.
Members of the Kharar Bar Association today struck work and staged a demonstration outside the court complex. Advocate Deepak Sharma said, “We are not against making Anandpur Sahib a new district, but it does not make sense to transfer the jurisdiction of these villages to Rupnagar district.”
BKU (Lakhowal) member Jaspal Singh Niamian said, “We will meet the Chamkaur Sahib MLA tomorrow after which a protest will be staged at Kharar bus stand.” The residents said the government as well as residents stand to lose financially also as collector’s rates are significantly higher in Mohali than Rupnagar.
