Khelo India Games: City boxers impress

Chandigarh, January 21

City pugilists bagged four medals, including two gold, on the penultimate day of the Khelo India Youth Games at Guwahati today.

Rahul defeated Assam’s Karamveer Phogat in the light middle weight class (66-70kg) in the boys’ U-17 competition to grab the city’s first gold medal in boxing, while Vikas doubled their tally with a hard fought win over Haryana’s Ravinder in the 63kg class. Both the boxers are students of PMLSD Public School, Sector 32.

In the girls’ U-17 light middle class (70kg), Loveleena Kaur, a student of Ankur Public School, Sector 14, bagged the bronze medal. Haryana’s Mahi Raghav claimed the gold medal, while Sharvari Kalyankar of Maharashtra took home the silver. Sneha, also from Haryana also got the bronze medal.

In the welter weight category (66kg), Rachita Dudy of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, and Pranjal Yadav of Haryana won a bronze medal each.

Himachal Pradesh’s Sneha won the gold medal after beating Haryana’s Lashu Yadav in the title clash.

All the four city boxers train under coach Bhagwant Singh at the Sector 56 Sports Complex.

Sports Director Tejdeep Singh Saini and District Sports Officer Ravinder Singh congratulated the winners.

Chandigarh are now place 16th in the medal tally with six gold, one silver and eight bronze medals.

City boys lose to Odisha

In hockey, Chandigarh boys lost 1-3 to Odisha on penalties in the U-21 bronze medal playoff after the two sides were tied 5-5 at the end of the regulation time.

Uttar Pradesh won the gold after beating Haryana 3-1 on penalties in the final. The two sides were locked 0-0 at the end of the fourth and final quarter.

The girls’ U-21 title went to Haryana. They beat Jharkhand 5-3 in the final. Maharashtra beat Mizoram 1-0 in the bronze medal playoff.
