The accused, Nerospreet Singh, originally from Amritsar, Punjab, resides in a rented house in Sector 16. He is a law student. The police had impounded the red Thar involved in the incident. Nerospreet reportedly admitted that he panicked following the accident and fled the scene.
The accident, which occurred around 3 pm on Wednesday, claimed the life of Sajaf (22) and left her sister Isha (24) injured. The residents of Burail, were crossing the road when the speeding vehicle struck them. Sajaf died on the spot, while Isha was admitted to the GMCH-32. Sajaf was a BA student at Dev Samaj College and pursuing a beauty parlour course.
In response to public outrage over police inaction on Thursday, the administration had suspended Burail police post in-charge Gurjivan Singh, who was also accused of pushing a TV reporter during a protest. Sub-Inspector Naveen has been appointed as the new in-charge.
Police investigations revealed the Thar had 14 prior challans for dangerous driving. The vehicle owner had sent his driver to explain the situation, but his testimony was inconsistent. The accused was released on bail, as section 106 (1), under which he is charged, is deals with bailable offence. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
