Light rain for next five days in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Light rain is expected over the next five days in the tricity. “Isolated rainfall activity is likely over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh during the next 24 hours and scattered to widespread rainfall activity with isolated thunderstorm/ lightning is expected from July 5-8,” said a Met department update. “No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely during the next five days,” it added. Meanwhile, increased humidity troubled people today. Though there was a forecast of rain today, it eluded the area. TNS

3 found dead at railway station

Chandigarh: Three persons have been found dead at the railway station here in the past 24 hours. Inspector Manisha Kumari, SHO of the GRP station, said two unidentified persons aged around 60 and 65 were found dead at the station. The man aged 60 was found on platform No. 5. He was rushed to the GMCH-32 where he was declared dead on arrival. The other man was found dead on platform No. 3. Both bodies have been kept at the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, for identification. Manisha said a woman, Saroj Yadav (35), was run over by the Shatabdi last evening. The family said she was mentally challenged and undergoing treatment.

IMA holds blood donation camp

Chandigarh: To promote voluntary blood donation among doctors, paramedical staff and general public, the local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), in collaboration with the blood centre, Government Medical Super Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, on Sunday organised its annual blood donation camp at the IMA office, Sector 35, on the occasion of Doctors’ Day. Dr Suman, DHS, Chandigarh, was the chief guest. Dr Parmjit Singh, Deputy Medical Superintendent, donated blood for the 33rd time. Around 50 donors were awarded with certificates and tokens of appreciation by the chief guest. TNS

Another title for city school

Chandigarh: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here has been conferred the India’s Best Schools title for 2021-22 by Career 360. This meritorious recognition has been conferred on the school for a second consecutive year. It has been awarded the highest AAAAA ranking. Senior Principal and Director Vineeta Arora and Vice-Principal Suparna Bansal congratulated the teachers and the students.

Students design low-cost purifiers

Mohali: Students of the University School of Engineering and Technology, Rayat Bahra University, have designed low-cost filters used in households. Dr Parvinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor, said the students had designed an economical water purifier, humidifier and air filter for domestic use. The water purifier is compact and can run on 12V as well as on solar power. Dr Mandeep Kaur Sandhu HOD (ECE) and electrical department, said the air purifier used high efficiency particulate air. Adda Cricket XI log 125-run win

Chandigarh: Adda Cricket XI, Dera Bassi, defeated SD Club, Sector 32, by 125 runs in the Vande Mataram T20 Cricket Tournament. Batting first, Adda Cricket XI posted 208/6 in the allotted 20 overs with the help of Dr Luthra (61), Pankaj Kumar (32) and Kamal (30). Ajay claimed four wickets, while Rajat and Takshit Chopra took one wicket each for the bowling side. In reply, SD team was bundled out for 83 runs in 10.3 overs. Ishan (19) was the lone main scorer for the side. Ashish claimed three wickets, while Nayan Jain claimed two for the bowling side. Amit, Kapil and Pankaj also claimed one wicket each. TNS

Over 500 examined at health camp

Chandigarh: A free health check-up camp was organised by Chandigarh Welfare Trust in the honour of doctors. This was the third camp organised by the Trust. It was inaugurated by Chandigarh MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra. Mayor Sarbjit Kaur, president of the Resident Welfare Association Col Gursewak Singh, and Founder of Chandigarh Welfare Trust and Chancellor, Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu were also present on the occasion. Opium smugglers’ gang busted, 3 held

Fatehgarh Sahib: The district police claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of opium smugglers with the arrest of its three members and recovered 2 kg of drug from their possession. They used to smuggle opium from other states and supply it in different areas of the Punjab. DSP Fatehgarh Sahib Manjit Singh said a police team had laid a naka on the Fatehgarh Sahib-Chandigarh Road near Gurudwara Jyoti Swarup Sahib. The police signalled three motorcycle- borne youths to stop for checking, but they tried to run away. After some chase, they were overpowered. During search, the police recovered 2 kg of opium from their custody and their motorcycle was impounded. They have been identified as Virendra Singh and Joga Singh, both residents of Sehjadpur village, and Mandeep Singh of Mandi Gobindgarh. OC
