Light to medium showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lashed Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula on Tuesday, bringing a brief dip in temperature but leaving humidity high at 86 per cent.

Rain that began in the afternoon continued till late evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the spell marked the retreat of the monsoon, with mainly dry weather expected in the coming days.

The forecast, however, suggests partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorm and lightning in Tricity till September 21. Day temperatures are likely to hover around 35°C and night temperatures around 24°C.

In the last 24 hours, Chandigarh recorded 2.2 mm of rainfall, Panchkula 12.5 mm and Mohali traces. The maximum temperature settled at 33.2°C in Chandigarh, 33.3°C in Mohali and 32.3°C in Panchkula. Minimum temperatures were 24.4°C, 25.5°C and 24.7°C, respectively.

“As compared to yesterday, there was a fall of 0.4°C and 0.3°C in the average maximum temperature in Punjab and Haryana, respectively,” the IMD said. The highest in the region was 37.1°C at Samrala in Ludhiana, followed by 36.5°C at Hisar.
