Living on the edge, Panchkula residents fear house collapse

Panic has gripped nearly 15 families residing in Sector 22 near Gurdwara Nada Sahib here after continuous rainfall over the past week triggered severe soil erosion, threatening the safety of their houses.

The affected residents, in a petition to Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, have highlighted that their homes, situated on a fragile hillside, face the danger of collapse. The downpour led to significant soil cutting, leaving the foundations of several houses exposed. Locals fear that if immediate protective measures are not taken, their dwellings could give way, endangering the lives of occupants.

Anit Singh and other residents urged the government to build a protective retaining wall of around 300 ft in length to prevent further erosion.

The letter stressed that approximately 50–60 family members lived in the affected homes and faced the constant risk of losing shelter during heavy rains.

Images shared on the social media along with the petition show cracks in walls, landslide-prone slopes, and makeshift sandbag barriers erected by locals in a desperate attempt to keep the soil intact.

“This is not just a matter of property, but of human safety. Without government support, our houses could collapse anytime due to the ongoing rains,” read the plea.

The residents expressed hope that with a CM from the Panchkula–Ambala region and both state and central governments led by the BJP, their request would be addressed on a priority to avert a major tragedy.
