Postal bookings under the Chandigarh Division fell by 89 per cent in April, when the lockdown was the harshest. However, it improved over the next three months as restrictions were eased, shows data with the India Post.

What stats say

Against the corresponding period in 2019, the division’s booking stats show a fall of 43 per cent in May, 7.3 per cent in June and 14 per cent in July, this year. Officials said data for August would be made available only after September 15.

Articles booked include registered letters and parcels, speed post (domestic and international), business parcel, electronic money orders and e-payments.

Manoj Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Post Office, Chandigarh Postal Division, said: “During the lockdown, several organisations and businesses were either not working or partially working.”

He said: “The service of registered articles was also restricted during that time. In July this year, a total of 3,78,257 accountable articles were delivered in the Chandigarh Division.”
