A cultural programme marked the Lohri celebrations at Rayat Bahra University here today.
The mood on the campus was upbeat and students were absorbed in the festive spirit. They danced around the sacred bonfire to the beat of drums.
The day began with speeches on the importance of the festival. Chairman of the Rayat Bahra Group, Gurvinder Singh Bahra, and Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh lit the bonfire which was followed by a cultural programme.
Bahra conveyed wishes to the staff and students. He said Lohri was celebrated to mark the end of peak winter and it was traditionally associated with the harvest of Rabi crops.
The VC said: “Lohri is the harvest festival of Punjab. Thus, people residing in Punjab attach great significance to Lohri, the festival of feasts and foods.”
The staff and students enjoyed peanuts, ‘rewari’ and ‘gazak’.
