The post has been lying vacant for the past 13 months after Arun Kumar, a retired 1989-batch Haryana cadre IAS officer, resigned from the post after two months following his appointment as Chairman of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Gurugram branch. The oath-taking ceremony for the newly appointed Chief Commissioner will be held on February 5 at Punjab Raj Bhawan.

Singh retired on February 28, 2023, upon attaining the age of superannuation. His last posting was as Additional Chief Secretary for School Education, Sports, and Youth Affairs, Government of Haryana. The Home Ministry had extended the Punjab Right to Service Act, 2011, and the Punjab Right to Service (Amended) Act, 2014, to the UT of Chandigarh on August 14, 2017.

Aimed at ensuring the time-bound delivery of public services, the Act also seeks to reduce corruption among government officials while increasing transparency and accountability.
