Major General Ajay H Chauhan (retd) has been appointed as Director, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (AFPI), Mohali. He takes over from Maj Gen BS Grewal (retd), whose term of engagement got over recently.
The AFPI undertakes a two-year residential programme for selected students, who have completed their matriculation, and prepares them to join the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune. Students also complete their Class XII alongside preparations for the National Defence Academy entrance examination.
Commissioned into 4 Mechanised Infantry (1 Sikh) in June 1984, Gen Chauhan commanded 140 Armoured Brigade, the only formation to operate the Arjun tank, and later, headed the Service Selection Centre (Central) in Bhopal.
Besides a tenure as a battalion commander at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he also served as the Deputy Director General, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh NCC Directorate. He retired from the Army in 2020.
