Major upgrade for only women gym at PU soon
Soon, all female students and not just athletes from the Panjab University will have access to the only women’s gym on campus. The facility is being developed by varsity in collaboration with the Punjab Government.
Housed in an arena, which also has multipurpose hall for hosting indoor sports, located next to the Captain Vikram Batra Shooting Range, the gym already has essential equipment. It will now be developed into a hi-tech facility for the varsity’s female athletes.
Chief among the additions will be the facility of sauna, physiotherapy centres and a meditation area.
“This is a women’s gym dedicated to players of the university and also for the female students of the campus. In the modern world, a hi-tech gym is a necessity for every sportspersons and such facility will also help the university students to move towards the fitness,” said Dr Rakesh Malik, Director Sports.
The vision is also to look beyond the present equipment that includes elliptical trainers, treadmill, exercise bikes, air rower machine, cross trainers and other muscle strengthening machines.
“The definition of fitness has changed in sports. If the university is eyeing on a hi-tech gym, it would have many more facilities. Also, we are planning to expand our physiotherapy centre here...which will be also an upgraded facility,” added Malik.
The facility, which has already been inaugurated a few times, is now expected to be operational throughout the year.At present, gym facility is available at varsity hostels but they are open only for occupants.
For the existing facility at the varsity gymnasium hall, the membership fee is divided into the Rs 50 registration fee (for all categories) and Rs 50 identity card fee (for all categories). This excludes the Rs 75 membership fee for competitors of the campus and affiliated colleges, including participating in inter-university campers and players of Sports Authority of India extension centre and for campus students.
For the faculty, non-teaching employees and their dependents (son/daughter), fellows, alumni and others is Rs 200 (per month) is charged. Others have to pay Rs 1,500 per month.
