Panchkula: Man arrested for immigration fraud, Rs 13 lakh recovered

Continuing crackdown on fraudulent immigration agents, the Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit of the local police has arrested an accused from Bihar who had duped a resident of Rs 13 lakh under the pretext of sending his grandson to Australia on student visa.

Last year, Azad Singh, a resident of Amravati Enclave in Panchkula district, had filed a complaint against a fake agent, Kamlesh Jha, a native of Samastipur, Bihar, who then lived as a tenant in Kharar.

According to the complaint, the accused promised to send Singh’s grandson, Kunal, to Australia on student visa. However, the visa, for which the complainant had paid Rs 13 lakh, turned out to be forged.

An FIR was registered at the Pinjore police station under Sections 406, 420, 467, 468, 471 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 24 of the Immigration Act.

Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta said the accused had switched off his mobile and gone into hiding in Bihar. A team, formed under Sub-Inspector Tajinder Pal Singh, in charge of the Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit, arrested Kamlesh Jha from Angar Ghat, Bihar, on June 4.

During his remand, the police recovered Rs 13 lakh he took from the victim for providing visa. — TNS
