Man arrested for murder bid

Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a person on the charge of attempt to murder and firing. Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said the suspect had been identified as Gurbaksh Singh, a resident of Seche Wal village. The IO said a case under Sections 307 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the suspect and his two accomplices, who are absconding. According to the IO, a pistol and six live cartridges were recovered from his possession. OC

Three held for theft at temple

Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested three persons on the charge of stealing a coin box from a temple. Investigating officer (IO) Lakhvir Singh said the suspects had been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, Kuldeep Singh, alias Jagga, residents of Bahmannia village, and Vishal Preet, alias Vishu, a resident of Kotli Gajran village. Rajiv Gupta, president of the temple committee of Dera Murli Dass Shiv Mandir near Danna Mandi in Shahkot, told the police that the suspects barged into the temple on the night of January 28 and decamped with a coin box containing offerings. The IO said a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC had been registered. OC

Man held with hooch bottles

Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have arrested a person on the charge of selling illicit liquor. Investigating officer Davinder Singh said the suspect had been identified as Balvir Singh, alias Sukha, a resident of Umrewal village. The IO said 25 bottles of hooch were recovered his possession. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Punjab Excise Act has been registered against the suspect. OC

Seven booked on assault charge

Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked eight persons on the charge of assaulting a villager and rioting. Investigating officer Kashmir said the suspects had been identified as Satvarg of Akbar Pur Kalan village, Billu of Mehat Pur, Kalu and Ekam, residents of Udho Wal village, and their three unidentified accomplices. Lovpreet, a resident of Parjian Khurd village, complained to the police that the suspects assaulted him and his colleagues on January 27. The IO said a case under Sections 323, 324, 148 and 149 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects. OC

Two liquor traders nabbed

Phagwara: The Nakodar police arrested two liquor smugglers and recovered four boxes of illicit liquor from their possession today. The arrested accused, identified as Lovepreet alias Wadhali and Sukhdeep, both residents of village Malrri near Nakodar, were nabbed at a check-point when they were coming on a bike bearing the registration number PB-08BN-4875 in Nakodar town. A case under the Punjab Excise Act has been registered.
