Chandigarh, August 31
A local court has sentenced 34-year-old Rohit Kumar, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 1. 50 lakh after convicting him in an NDPS Act case.
On the complaint of ASI Mohinder Kumar, the police had booked the accused under Section 22 of the Act two years ago.
The complainant had stated that on March 19, 2022, he, along with other cops, was on patrolling duty in the area under the Bapu Dham Colony police post when they saw the accused with a white polythene bag near Kinnar Mandir. On seeing them, the accused turned back and started moving fast. On suspicion, he was apprehended.
The police checked the polythene bag he was carrying and found 15 injections of buprenorphine and another 15 of Avid.
The police claimed that during interrogation, the accused revealed that he had purchased the banned injections from Nazibabad, UP. The accused was a habitual offender as he was involved in four similar cases earlier, the police claimed.
The counsel of the accused, however, denied the charges and stated that the accused was falsely implicated in the case.
On the other hand, Sunil Dutt, the public prosecutor, argued that prosecution had proved that charges against the accused.
After hearing the arguments, the court sentenced the accused to undergo 15 years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 22 of the NDPS Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.50 lakh on him.
