Man gets 10-year jail for carrying banned injections

A local court has awarded 10-year imprisonment to a resident of Maloya for possessing 24 banned injections.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict identified as Sanwar Khan.

According to the prosecution, the matter dates back to October 28, 2017, when a police team was patrolling in Maloya. Around 7.10 pm, the police saw a man coming from the Jampur Barrier side on foot carrying a bag in his right hand. On seeing the police, the said person turned and started moving at a fast pace. On getting suspicious of his activity, the police apprehended the man. On being questioned, he disclosed his name as Sanwar Khan. Upon checking the carry bag, the police recovered 12 injections of Pheniramine of 10 ml each and 12 injections of Buprenorphine of 2 ml each wrapped in a newspaper. As the man failed to produce any licence or permit for possessing the injections, he was arrested under the NDPS Act.

As the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, the court convicted the accused for the offence committed under Section 22 of the NDPS Act.

“The accused was found in possession of commercial quantity of 12 injections of Buprenorphine. The narcotics are spoiling the very future of youth of the country. Nemesis of narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances has become a menace to the society. A person in possession of commercial quantity of narcotics or psychotropic substances is not entitled for any leniency. More so, when the recovery falls within the purview of commercial quantity of the contraband,” read the order of the court.
