A local court has sentenced 23-year-old Harsh Kumar, a resident of Sector 51, Chandigarh, to undergo five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a snatching case registered one year ago.
A case was registered under Sections 379A and 411 of the IPC at the Sector 31 police station in Chandigarh in this connection. In a complaint, Shadir, a resident of Mauli Baidwan, Mohali, stated that he was doing whitewash work at gurdwara Sahib, Sector 46, Chandigarh. On November 20, 2023, around 5.15 pm, he was standing near grill of the park in front of the gurdwara. Meanwhile, an unknown person arrived on the spot on Platina motorcycle and asked him about an address. Suddenly he snatched complainant’s mobile phone and sped on his bike from the spot. The complainant could not note down registration number of the motorcycle.
During course of investigation, the accused was arrested on November 26, 2023, and snatched mobile phone was recovered from his possession. After completion of the investigation charge sheet against the accused filed in a court.
Finding case prima facie, charges were framed against the accused to which he pleaded not guilty and claimed trial. Counsel of the accused argued that his client was innocent and had committed no offence of any kind. The public prosecutor said the prosecution had proved the case beyond a shadow of reasonable doubt.
After hearing arguments, the court sentenced the accused to undergo five-year RI. The court also imposed a fine of 15,000 on the convict.
