Chandigarh: A man, a native of Nepal, has been arrested by the Chandigarh Police with 3 kg of charas. According to the police, Ram Kumar Thapa was arrested from near the lake in Sector 42 on January 27. The suspect, who was carrying the charas in a bag, tried to flee from the spot. However, he was nabbed by the police. The police said a case had been registered against him under the NDPS Act at the Sector 36 police station. TNS
International conference
Chandigarh: To commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana is organising an international conference on ‘philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev and its relevance’. Man held guilty of harassment
Chandigarh: A local court on Tuesday held a man guilty of sexually harassing his minor niece. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on January 30. On February 13, 2019, a case under section 354 A (sexual harassment) of the IPC and Section 8 of the POCSO Act was registered against Sagar, a resident of a colony in the city, on the complaint of the 14-year-old victim. Republic Day celebrations
Chandigarh: The Lions Club, Chandigarh, celebrated Republic Day at its Karsan Multipurpose Project on Sunday. Ranvir Uppal from the club hoisted the national flag. As many as 85 children from government schools and slum areas presented an hour-long entertainment programme. According to Sushil Kapoor, secretary of the club, all participants were given a cash prize of Rs 100 each and around 600 persons were served with ‘langar’ after the function. TNS
Man walks free in IT Act case
Chandigarh: A local court has acquitted a Mohali resident in a case of sending defamatory emails against a hotel. The accused, identified as Avneesh Gupta of Mohali, was booked under Section 66 of the IT Act and 465 of the IPC. He was accused of creating a fake email ID and sending emails to clients of Hotel JW Marriot. During trial, defence counsel Terminder Singh argued that accused has been falsely implicated in the case, as the prosecution has not produced any evidence in shape of WiFi record or any laptop recovered from him, while no records of emails received have been found. Nurses’ assn head suspended
Chandigarh: The authorities of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have suspended the president of the Nurses’ Welfare Association on the account of giving “vague and misleading” statements to the media. In an order, the hospital administration stated that Dabkesh Kumar, a staff nurse posted in the Nursing department, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. He was found prima-facie guilty in a fact-finding inquiry. The Nursing Welfare Association said they had been raising voice against the “indifferent” attitude of the authorities for not accepting the demands of nurses and rather asking them to refrain from entertaining the media. “If the orders are not taken back, we will go on an indefinite strike from February 14 and will wear black badges from Wednesday,” said the association. “Dabkesh was issued a show-cause notice for giving vague and misleading statements to the media against higher authorities. A preliminary enquiry was conducted which found him guilty, on the basis of which he has been suspended and is being charge-sheeted as per the rules,” said a spokesperson for the GMCH-32. TNS
One held for raping minor
Ambala: A minor girl was raped and threatened with dire consequences, the police said here on Tuesday. Acting swiftly on the victim’s father complaint, the police arrested Haider Ali and produced him before a court, which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. According to the police, the victim’s father had reported to the women police station in Naraingarh that the suspect had raped and threatened his daughter on January 27. TNS
Two nabbed for vehicle thefts
Ambala: The police have arrested two persons – Shamshad, alias Bhoora, of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Shahzad of Haridwar in Uttarakhand – in separate cases of vehicle theft and claimed to have recovered two stolen motorcycles from their possession, officials said here. According to the police, the suspects had stolen motorcycles of Ravi Kumar from Mahesh Nagar near here on August 30 last and Vipin Kumar from Mahesh Nagar on August 22 last. Both suspects were sent to one-day police custody. TNS
Two snatchers in police net
Ambala: The police have arrested two persons in separate cases of snatching, officials said here on Tuesday. According to the police, Jatinder Singh, alias Monu, of Ambala Sadar was arrested for snatching a purse of a woman in Ambala City on October 19 last. He was sent to two-day police remand by a local court, the officials said. In a separate case, Aman, alias Mor, of Ambala Cantonment was arrested for snatching a purse of a woman in Ambala Cantonment. He will be produced before a court on Wednesday. TNS
2 Ambala natives held for assault
Ambala: The police have arrested two persons – Rahul and Manoj Kumar of Ambala Cantonment – in a case of assault and criminal intimidation. Raju of Ambala Cantonment had reported to the police that both suspects, along with their accomplices, had assaulted and threatened him with dire consequences in Ambala Cantonment on January 1. Both suspects will be produced before a court on Wednesday. TNS
30-year-old woman ends life
Dera Bassi: A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Dera Bassi on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Suman Bala, a resident of Dera Bassi. The police said the incident came to light when the victim’s husband, who had gone out for work, came back and found Suman hanging from a ceiling fan. He then informed the police. The police said the victim was mentally unfit. The police handed over the body to the family members after conducting an autopsy. OC
Thieves strike at garment shop
Zirakpur: Thieves entered a garment shop in Zirakpur on the intervening night of January 27 and January 28 and decamped with clothes. According to sources, the incident came to light on Tuesday morning when the owner of the shop came and found the locks of the garment shop broken. He approached the Zirakpur police, who lodged a DDR in this connection. OC
Minor girl goes missing
Zirakpur: A 12-year-old girl has reportedly gone missing on January 25 from Zirakpur. The victim’s sister, a resident of Dhakoli, has lodged a complaint with the police in this regard. She said her sister who is mentally unfit, left home on January 25 but did not return. The complainant alleged that her sister may have been abducted by some unidentified person. Ropar: Ajay Agnihotri has been elected president of the Rupnagar Press Club unanimously. Sandeep Vashishat was elected senior vice-president of the club. Hunar clears IGU trials
Chandigarh: City golfer Hunar Mittal has cleared the Indian Golf Union (IGU) National trials for the Queen Sirkit Cup 2020. The trials were held at the Noida Golf Club and Jay Pee Greens Golf Club from January 19-25. The trails were conducted over six rounds out of which best of five were taken into consideration. The 15-year-old finished with a total of 391 (71-80-84-80-76). TNS
