A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to kill his wife in broad daylight near Sector 12-A today though the police said the pistol recovered from the suspect was a toy.
The suspect was identified as Shamsher Singh, who lives in Sector 19.
According to the FIR, the suspect followed the auto-rickshaw in which his wife was travelling in from Zirakpur, stopped it and pointed the pistol at her head.
On a complaint of the auto driver, identified as Sanjay Kumar of Mauli Jagran, a case was registered against the suspect under the Arms Act and the IPC at the Sector 14 police station.
Kumar told the police a woman boarded his auto-rickshaw near City Court in Dhakoli when he was on his way to Majri Chowk from Zirakpur. “As I turned towards Sector 12-A, a turbaned man blocked my auto with his bike and held a pistol towards us. The suspect then dragged out his wife and started beating her up. He then placed a gun on her head with an intention to kill her. As he saw the police, he tried to flee.”
Passersby nabbed him and handed him over to the police.
Inspector Rajiv Miglani, SHO, Sector 14 police station, said, “The couple was having an strained relationship for a long time. Last week, the woman had shifted to her father’s house. She regularly takes an auto to reach her workplace. Today, the suspect followed her and stopped her.”
The SHO said the police would take an expert opinion before dropping the charge under the Arms Act against the suspect. — TNS
