Man wanted for 16 bike thefts held in Panchkula
The police apprehended a notorious bike thief near Sector 11.
The police were investigating a complaint was filed at the Sector 10 police post by Bansi Lal, son of Fakir, earlier this month. The complainant had told the police that he works as a salesman and had parked his bike outside a shop in Sector 11. Later, he found it missing.
Based on his complaint, an unidentified bike thief was booked under Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Sector 5 police station and an investigation was launched.
The police team scanned the footage revered from CCTV cameras installed in areas around Sector 11, identifying a suspicious youth.
Based on this suspicion, all patrolling units, ERVs, and riders were alerted to keep a close watch on him.
Meanwhile, constable Rinku and SPO Vinod Hasan, who were patrolling in Sector 11, identified and apprehended the suspect, bringing him to the police station for questioning.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to the theft. The accused was identified as Gurvinder Singh, son of Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Ekta Vihar Colony, Jagadhri, Yamunanagar, aged 40 years.
He had been residing at various locations in Panchkula, including Majri Chowk and Zirakpur.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Himadri Kaushik awarded appreciation certificates to the two policemen who apprehended the thief and encouraged their efforts. She further added that the police will continue to strengthen surveillance at crowded areas and identified locations through regular foot patrolling, 25 riders, and 18 ERV drivers.
Besides, strict monitoring will be conducted on vehicles without number plates and triple-riding bikers.
The police investigation revealed that the accused had committed 16 bike thefts. He had cases registered against him in Sector-5 Police Station (7 cases), Sector-20 Police Station (4 cases), Sector-14 Police Station(2 cases), Sector-7 Police Station, Panchkula (1 case), Chandimandir Police Station(1 case) and Zirakpur, Punjab (1 case).
The investigation further revealed that the accused was a drug addict and had previously worked as a labourer. Today, he was presented before the court, which granted a one-day police remand.
During the remand period, the police will conduct a thorough interrogation to determine if he was involved in more thefts. The accused also disclosed that he had stored stolen bikes at various locations, including Zirakpur and Panchkula, which the police will attempt to recover during the remand.
