Many still to get veggies in city

Residents of several parts of the city today again failed to get fruits and vegetables on the doorstep.

For the smooth supply of essential items, the Administration sent 70 CTU buses laden with fruits and vegetables to different sectors and the periphery of the city. However, these buses could not cover the entire city.

Ramesh Chander, a resident of Sector 45, said a bus reached his sector, but there was no prior information about the arrival of the bus. When he came to know about it and reached there, the bus had already run out of stock. He saw people still indulging in panic buying. He requested the authorities to fix the quantity of a commodity a person can purchase to prevent hoarding and equal distribution of food items.

Parminder Kaur, a resident of Sector 20, said even street vendors had started taking undue benefit of the situation and increased the rates manifold. She bought a kg of peas for Rs 120, whereas the rate of the vegetable was Rs 40 per kg a few days ago, she said.

Amit Kapoor, a resident of Sector 15, said the authorities should allow online portals to sell essential items, which would be efficient in delivery and provide better quality at comparatively cheaper rates.

UT Adviser Manoj Parida said they received complaints regarding vegetable vendors fleecing consumers. “We will try to regulate the prices from tomorrow,” he said.
