MC opens another ‘Rupee Store’

In order to provide affordable items to those in need while promoting the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle (RRR), the Municipal Corporation (MC) has come up with ‘One Rupee Store’ at the community centre in Indira Colony, Manimajra.

Mayor Kuldeep Kumar, in the presence of MC Joint Commissioner Gurinder Singh Sodhi and area Councillor Suman Devi, inaugurated the new store, attended by prominent persons of the ward.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said the MC’s permanent RRR Centre in Sector 17 has received an overwhelming response from citizens over the past year, enabling the establishment of this new Rupee Store. The aim of the Rupee Store is to provide affordable access to various items, such as books, electronics, clothing, crockery, kitchenware, toys and bed sheets, all priced at just Rs 1 per item, while promoting the RRR concept.

He further shared that the Sector 17 RRR Centre collected various items, including clothes, books, footwear, crockery, toys, electronics, bags and furniture. After cleaning, repairing and refurbishing these donated items, the MC is committed to organise more such one-rupee stores in different areas and wards of the city.

MC Commissioner Amit Kumar expressed gratitude to the citizens of the Tricity for their overwhelming response and support. He noted that this is the most successful one-rupee store, and the MC is committed to establishing more such stores throughout the city to serve the community. The establishment of this store is a testament to the MC’s efforts towards creating sustainable and inclusive practices that benefit citizens from all walks of life.

Since 2023, the MC has embarked on a journey to promote sustainable behaviour and practices among its citizens. As part of this initiative, 10 one-rupee stores have already been successfully organised in Dhanas, Mani Majra, Maloya, Sunder Nagar, Ramdarbar, a special store for Safaimitras, Sector 56, and Daddu Majra.

The Commissioner emphasised that this initiative aims to protect and preserve the environment, instilling a pro-planet behavioral change through individual action in daily life. The MCC is reaffirming its dedication to sustainability and working towards a future where emphasis is placed on resourceful utilisation, mindful consumption and waste reduction. By embracing the principles of RRR, the Corporation is on a mission to create a garbage-free city that is more resilient, equitable and sustainable for generations to come.
