The Municipal Corporation has deployed field staff to proactively cover open electricity junction boxes, pedestals and cable joints across the city. To enhance public safety, caution stickers with danger signs are also being pasted on electricity poles and boxes to warn residents of potential hazards.

In a report published in these columns on June 24 this year, Chandigarh Tribune had highlighted how open junction boxes and loose wires of electricity poles pose threat to residents.

MC Commissioner Amit Kumar has directed the engineers concerned to ensure all exposed and dangerous electrical points are properly covered and secured. He further instructed officials to remain vigilant and ensure upkeep and safety of such installations in their respective areas.

Earlier, the MC had issued a public advisory through various newspapers, urging citizens not to touch streetlight poles or any electrical equipment during rains. The advisory also included important guidelines to prevent electric shocks or fatal accidents.

Kumar appealed to all residents to stay alert and cooperate by reporting any open or damaged electrical point to the MC helpline for immediate action. The Tribune had surveyed junction boxes after an auto driver died due to electric shock from a pole in Manimajra’s Vikas Nagar. Area residents had alleged that junction boxes of the poles were damaged for many days and wires were lying open.
