MC to spend over Rs 100 crore on recarpeting of roads in Chandigarh
Agenda to come up during General House meeting today
The Municipal Corporation (MC) will spend over Rs 100 crores on recarpeting of roads. The agenda in this regard will be placed during the House meeting to be held on Friday.
Earlier, the MC had issued tenders worth over Rs 50 crores for the work after the Centre approved Rs 125 crores for it. The tenders were floated for the roads falling within the “very poor” category.
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla said the work for the improvement of the remaining roads would be started soon. The MC had not discriminated in any wards .The plan has been prepared for all wards.
The MC failed to recarpet roads for years due to financial crunch. An internal survey found at least 60 roads in “very poor” condition. Besides, the condition of 23 roads was categorised as “poor”. The survey was carried out with an aim to prioritise the recarpeting work once the civic body received the fund.
Sources said the “very poor” tag indicated that the roads were in a pathetic condition and required urgent recarpeting. These roads have not been recarpeted for more than five years. In a majority of the cases, the roads were last recarpeted six to eight years ago.
The MC is responsible for maintaining approximately 1,860 km of roads, which is approximately 60% of the total road length of Chandigarh.
As per the agenda, Rs 8 crores will be spent on the roads in Sectors 43, 44, 51, 35-A and 44-C , Rs 3 crore on roads in Sector 46, Rs 5 crores in Sectors 37 and 38 and Palsora, Rs 3 crores in Sectors 48 and 47, Rs 3 crores in EWS Colony at Dhanas, Rs 4 crores in Sectors 42, 41 and 36, Rs 12 crores in Sectors 32 and 33, Rs 13 crores in subdivision number 6 and Rs 18 crores on roads in Sectors 15, 17, 21, 22, 18 and 19.
Dalip Sharma, chairman of the MC Road Committee, said, “We have prepared a plan and the work will start soon.”
