A local court has ruled that a mere breakup of a relationship between a consenting couple cannot result in initiation of criminal proceedings.

The court was hearing a criminal case against Nishant, a resident of Ram Darbar in Chandigarh, accused of raping a woman on the pretext of false promise of marriage.

In this case, the court has acquitted Nishant in the rape case registered three years ago.

While referring to a Supreme Court judgment, the local court said that what was a consensual relationship between the parties at the initial stages cannot be given a colour of criminality when the said relationship does not fructify into a marital relationship.

The court added that in this case, both the parties are now married to someone else and have now moved on in their respective lives.
