Migrant held for trying to rape two-year-old in Mohali

Mohali, July 6

The Balongi police arrested a migrant labourer for allegedly trying to rape a two-year-old girl on Sunday night.

The suspect has been identified as Shiv Sagar (35), a resident of Azad Nagar in Balogi. He was produced before a local court today which has sent him to four-day police custody.

In a complaint to the police, the victim’s parents said on July 3, Shiv took the girl from near their house on the pretext of playing with her while her mother was inside the house. They alleged that the suspect took her behind the bushes near their locality and tried to rape her. In the meantime, they reached there and on seeing them, the suspect fled from the spot leaving the girl behind.

The police conducted a raid at Shiv’s house yesterday and arrested him.

Investigating officer ASI Bahadar Singh said, “The suspect tried to rape the girl, but she was saved at the right time. He is said to be mentally unstable and his wife had also left him. He was currently living with his cousin brothers.”

A case has been registered against the suspect under Sections 376, 511 of the IPC and relevant Sections of the POCSO Act at the Balongi police station. — TNS
