Missing for two days, girl found dead in Zirakpur; four booked

Two days after she was reported missing, the body of a 23-year-old girl was found wrapped in a plastic sheet in a drain near Rajpura late on Monday night. The police have arrested a Banur resident and booked three others on murder charges.

The victim, identified Mitali, a resident of Badal Colony, Zirakpur, worked at IT Park, Chandigarh. According to the information, the victim’s body had injury marks.

Notably, her father, Sohan Lal, had earlier filed a kidnapping complaint at the Zirakpur police station. He had told the police that a Banur-based youth, Sultan Mohammed, had been harassing his daughter for a long time. The accused and his aides had allegedly kidnapped Mitali around 11.30pm on March 7.

Sohan Lal further said that the matter had been brought to the notice of Investigating Officer Ashok Kumar the same day but alleged that no action was taken.

“She has gone from home only, not died yet,” the Investigating Officer was quoted as saying in the FIR.

Irate local residents, meanwhile, gathered outside the Zirakpur police station late on Monday night to call for justice for the victim and her family.

Mitali’s father demanded that the case be probed further to unearth the possible involvement of other people in the conspiracy and that all the accused be arrested at the earliest.

Sharing further details, enior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Pareek said a murder case has been registered against the four accused.

Three of the four men, including the prime accused, Sultan Mohammed, and his aides Raj and Amandeep are absconding.

The fourth accused, Rohit has been arrested, while the police team have also impounded the car allegedly used in the crime.

The SSP further added that the police team is investigating the matter and all the accused will be arrested soon.

A post-mortem has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
