Following reports of illegal mining in the Ghaggar river near Kakrali village in Dera Bassi area, the administration has intensified its crackdown on unlawful mining activities to ensure strict enforcement of regulations and protect the state’s natural resources.
On Friday night, the Mining Department carried out a special drive across various locations in Mohali Sub-Division, setting up checkpoints to inspect tipper trucks and verify transportation permits. During the operation, several vehicles were stopped and their documents thoroughly checked to ensure compliance with legal norms.
Officials identified four sites where sand and gravel mining had taken place, adding the activity appeared to be more prominent on the Haryana side than in Punjab.
SDO Mining Shubham Goel said the drive was conducted under the supervision of District Mining Officer Khushwinder Singh and Superintending Engineer Rajinder Ghai, in line with the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining.
He appealed to individuals and vehicle owners engaged in the transportation of minor minerals to refrain from illegal excavation or movement of materials, urging them instead to obtain official permits through the Mining Department after paying the due royalty to the state exchequer. The revenue collected through legitimate channels, he noted, is utilised by the Punjab Government for public welfare and overall development.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said surprise inspections would continue and anyone found violating mining rules or engaging in illegal activities would face strict legal action under the law.
The administration reiterated its full commitment to implementing the Punjab Government’s directive to completely curb illegal mining, ensuring transparency, accountability and the sustainable use of natural resources across the district.
