Mohali civic body gives job to wife of deceased sewerman

The Mohali Municipal Corporation today gave a job to the wife of sewerman Harpal Singh, who died in the line of duty, here around one and a half months ago.

Mohali Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu handed over the appointment letter to Balwinder Kaur, wife of Harpal Singh. Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi, Commissioner Kamal Garg and councillor Baljit Kaur were present on the occasion.

Two sewermen had died in a mishap while on duty in Mohali. The Municipal Corporation had earlier handed over a cheque for Rs10 lakh to the family of Harpal Singh. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said though Harpal was not a direct employee of the Municipal Corporation, he was engaged in sewer cleaning work in Mohali. Realising its responsibility and obligation, the Municipal Corporation gave the job of a peon to Harpal’s wife Baljinder Kaur so that she could take care of her children in a proper manner.

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said officials were also in talks with the family of another sewerman, who died in the mishap, and his family would be given relief by the corporation.
