Mohali DC orders fresh survey of ongoing construction works
Two days after two youngsters died in the Sohana building collapse, Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain today held an emergent meeting with Municipal Corporation and administration officials and ordered a fresh survey of ongoing constructions. She also directed the officials concerned to issue notices for the removal of violations, warning of strict action against those flouting the norms.
“The local bodies falling in the district have been directed to ensure all ongoing constructions are as per the building by-laws otherwise violation notices would be served to avert any untoward incident in future,” she said.
The DC said the respective building branches should be made more responsive and accountable by ensuring timely action in the wake of the fatal incidents that involved gross human negligence. “Merely approving drawings is not enough; rather one should inspect the ongoing constructions from time to time to check whether the construction is as per the building by-laws/approved drawing or not,” she said.
Chairing a meeting with ADC(G) Viraj S Tidke, MC Commissioner T Benith, ADC (UD) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal, ADC(RD) Sonam Chaudhary and Chief Minister Field Officer (CMFO) Deepankar Garg, said local bodies should start fresh surveys to check the constructions. She pressure for notices being issued to those in violation of the rules, who upon failure to remove the violation would face stern action and even demolition.
The MC Commissioner was also asked to ensure speeding up the process of serving notices.
Further urging the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) to check the violation in the construction of multistory buildings, the DC said areas outside the MC limits should be taken care of by the Authority to ensure no such incidents occur in the future.
For the rural areas (“Lal Dora”) falling under the jurisdiction of Gram Panchayats, a separate letter would be sent to the Rural Development and Panchayat Department for adopting a stringent approach towards the mushrooming of high rise buildings in “Lal Lakeer” areas.
Sending a strong message to the violators, Jain said the greed to house innocent people in unapproved accommodations or digging up basements without the approval of appropriate authority would cost them dear from now.
