Mohali dist to have 10 new sewage treatment plants
Ten more sewage treatment plants (STP) of 80 MLD capacity are set to augment the disposal of liquid waste in the district.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said the district already had a capacity of 101 million litres a day to treat sewage, and to meet the additional need of 46.10 MLD, 10 more STPs would be commissioned. These would treat 80 million litres of sewage water every day.
The STPs have been proposed at Lalru, Dera Bassi, Zirakpur, Sector 83, Kharar and Nayagaon. Of these, the work of Nayagaon STP is already underway. The Deputy Commissioner said the work, which started last year, was expected to be complete by February 2026. The successful bid for Nayagaon was made at Rs 35.52 crore and the scope of work includes laying of 4,600 meters of sewer lines and building a STP of 18.50 MLD capacity. So far, 1,200 meters of sewer lines have been laid, while 12 per cent of progress has been made on the STP.
Similarly, the work of STPs having a capacity of 15 MLD and 10 MLD in Kharar has also been allotted and the construction will soon be started.
The agencies concerned, which have to execute the work, have been asked to complete the pre-tendering formalities at the earliest to get all the projects done on time.
ADC (Urban Development) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal said the rest of the installation work was assessed at various stages and the tenders would be floated soon.
