Mohali Mayor, councillors raise waste management issue with local govt

Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu and Congress councillors supporting him today met the Local Government Secretary and Director and the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company Director to submit a memorandum for allotment of a dumping site for the city.
He apprised them of the state of the Solid Waste Management Centre (Dumping Ground) at Samgoli, which is still incomplete and highlighted the serious issue concerning the health and sanitation of the residents.
Notably, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sanjeev Vashisht had recently highlighted the mounds of garbage in Industrial Area, Phase 8, with stray cattle feeding on vegetable waste on the roadside.
Addressing the issue, Sidhu said to Mohali deals with more than 150 tonne garbage daily, whereas the contract is only for the management of 100 tonne waste. “Garbage from Balongi, JLPL, TDI, and sectors developed by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is disposed of in Mohali. As a result, heaps of garbage are lying at many locations, which are not only spreading foul smell but also posing a serious health hazard to the people,” Sidhu said.
Sidhu added that in the absence of a dumping ground in Mohali, all waste is being dumped at resource management centre (RMC) points. “People are living in hell-like conditions,” he said.
