The decision was taken during the MC House meeting today. The civic body is mulling Rs 100 or 150 per floor per month as user charges, which could be imposed along with annual property tax. At present, the civic body is spending Rs 10 crore annually for this purpose, councillors said.

The MC had been lagging in implementing the segregation of waste whereas it was already being done in Chandigarh and other cities.

The agenda for mechanical sweeping of internal roads (C-roads) was unanimously rejected after a considerable deliberations on its viability and efficacy.

Meanwhile, garbage disposal continued to be the hot topic as councillors expressed their resentment at mounting heaps. As Phase-11, Phase-5 and Shahimajra area councillors demanded the removal of refuse management centres (RMC points) as foul smell and unhygienic conditions vitiated the atmosphere.

MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh asked them to provide an alternative. “Your waste has to be collected and processed somewhere or the other. If not your place, you tell me which place,” he asked the councillors.

Deputy Mayor threatens to quit

During a heated debate with Ward No. 2 councillor Manjit Singh Sethi over the working of MC officials, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi threatened to resign from his post in the evening while saying that officials don’t listen to him. However, nothing of that sort took place.
