Morinda man gets 60-year jail for killing wife, 2 others

To serve 10 more years for attempt to kill child

Rupnagar, July 21

A local court today sentenced Alam (28), a resident of Ward No. 1, Sugar Mill Road, Morinda, to three life terms for killing his wife, sister-in-law and wife’s nephew and causing injuries to another nephew. The accused shall have to serve a total of 70 years in prison.

Didn’t harm his son

“The convict’s mother-in-law escaped by locking herself in a room. When he attacked his wife with the axe, his nine-month-old son was sleeping beside her. He did not harm him. He went on to kill his sister-in-law, her son and injure another child. After the incident, he consumed a poisonous substance and was admitted to the hospital,” said Morinda SHO Sunil Kumar.

On the night of June 3, 2020, Alam murdered his wife Kajal, sister-in-law Jaspreet Kaur and her son Sahil with an axe while they were asleep and attempted to murder Bobby, second son of his sister-in-law, who were staying in the parental house of his wife in Morinda.

Agreeing to the contention of the Additional Public Prosecutor, Ramesh Kumari, the District and Sessions Judge, Rupnagar, held Alam guilty and convicted him of murder under Section 302 of IPC and attempt to murder under Section 307.

The court applied Section 57 of the IPC to the case, which provides for a life term for 20 years. By virtue of this Section, Alam will remain in jail for up to 60 years, i.e. 20 years each under Section 302, IPC (for three offences), and for further 10 years for offence under Section 307.

Morinda SHO Sunil Kumar, who was the investigating officer in the case, said, “The accused hails from a tribe in Nakodar. In the investigation, it came to light that he suspected his wife of having an extra-marital affair during Covid times.

“The mother-in-law, complainant in the case, escaped by locking herself in a room. When he attacked his wife with the axe, his nine-month-old son was sleeping beside her. He did not harm him. He went on to kill his sister-in-law, her son and injure another child. After the incident, he consumed a poisonous substance and was admitted to the hospital, from where he was arrested.”
