MP and former Union Minister Manish Tewari has expressed worry over ‘wildly fluctuating’ ranking of Chandigarh in Swachh Survekshan since 2016.

During the Lok Sabha session, Tewari raised questions over the city’s ranking in the 2024 survey. He said Chandigarh was only given three stars in garbage-free city category while “it should have been a cent percent rating for the City Beautiful”.

Commenting on the reply given by Tokhan Sahu, Minister of State of Housing and Urban Affairs, to his questions over city’s performance in the Swachh Survekshan 2024, Tewari said the city’s wildly fluctuating ranking since 2016 was extremely worrying. “ In a million plus cities category, akin to an open category, Chandigarh was ranked second in 2016. In 2021, the rank fell to 38 in the category of above 1 lakh population. While segregation at source was 14% in 2024-25, it was 100% in 2023. This defies logic. In 2022, it was 94%,” he said.

Tewari had asked for the details of Chandigarh’s year-on-year performance in the Swachh Survekshan rankings since 2016, particularly in indicators related to segregation at source, waste processing and door-to-door collection.
