Chandigarh, March 4
The UT police have rearrested a murder convict, who had been absconding for the past 13 years.
The convict has been identified as Parmod Sharma, a resident of Dera Bassi.
The police said a murder case was registered at the Industrial Area police station in May 1999 on the complaint of Avdesh Kumar, who had reported that victim Upender Singh was beaten up by Parmod Sharma, Ashok Kumar, SP Singh and others that led to the victim’s death.
During the course of investigation, accused Ashok Kumar, Parmod Sharma, Sunderika, Parsad, Sangeshwar and Hari Lal were arrested.
After the trial in 2002, the local court convicted accused persons with seven years of imprisonment along with fine.
The police said after passing three-and-half-year of punishment, Sharma filed a petition against the conviction in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, following which he was granted bail. During the hearing, the court rejected the appeal in 2006, however, despite surrendering, the convict remained absconding.
Sharma was rearrested by a team headed by Assistant Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Singh yesterday. He was produced in the court today, which sent him to judicial custody.
