National Games: Mohali’s Niharika wins gold medal

Mohali’s Niharika Vashisht and local judoka Mehak Singh bagged medals during the ongoing 38th National Games in Dehradun. Mohali-based triple jumper Niharika became the champion by recording a best of 13.37m in long jump to take the gold for Punjab. This was her first medal after returning from a knee injury. During the 2023 Indian Grand Prix (5) held at the Sector 7 sports complex, she won a silver medal with a jump of 12.94m.

Meawhile, local judoka Mehak Singh bagged the bronze medal in the -52kg weight category. She won the first bout against Archana of Uttarakhand, followed by another win in the quarterfinal bout against Sandhiya Tiwari of Madhya Pradesh. In the semifinal, she lost against Mehruk Makhwana of Gujarat in golden score, while in the bronze medal match she overpowered Sharda Devi of Manipur.

Chitkara paddlers shine

Chitkara University team bagged medals in the ongoing 38th National Games. Raegan Reuel Albuquerque won the silver medal in the men’s table tennis team event, while Lakshita Narang, Vanshika Bhargava and Suhana Saini claimed the women’s team bronze medal while representing Punjab.

Toor wins shot put medal

In men’s shot put event national record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor of Punjab expectedly won the gold with a throw of 19.74m. Defending champion Samardeep Singh Gill (19.38m) of Madhya Pradesh and Prabhkirpal Singh (19.04m), also of Punjab, clinched the silver and bronze medals. Toor’s national record stands at 21.77m.
