Panjab University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Renu Vig has been conferred with the rank of honorary colonel and appointed as Colonel Commandant in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The rank is granted to persons who contribute significantly in furtherance of goals and activities of the NCC. She is the first female VC of the university to be conferred with the honorary rank.
The piping ceremony was held at the auditorium of NCC Group Headquarters here today.
The honorary rank and certificate was issued by Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh, Director General, NCC, New Delhi, and presented by Major General Manjeet Singh Mokha, Additional Director General, NCC Directorate, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.
Her father Jai Dev Cheema and spouse Sandeep Vig were also present on the occasion.
Expressing gratitude for conferment of the honour, the VC said the prestigious title was not merely a personal accolade, but a testimony to the shared commitment and hard work of the PU and the NCC to uphold the basic tenets of unity and discipline.
The event was attended by senior officials of the PU and NCC and college principals among others.
In a press conference later, the NCC Coordinator briefed the mediapersons that the VC was one of the heads of 19 academic institutions selected for the honour.
